#chiclub2024 (15 July 2024)

Posted by Kotaro on 15 July 2024

#chiclub is an opportunity for CHI authors to receive valuable feedback on their papers and improve academic writing in preparation for their CHI submissions. As authors, we often have blind spots in our work that are difficult for us to see but are obvious to others. The review process helps identify these blind spots and allows us to improve our writing. The goals of the event are:

  • Provide constructive reviews to authors to improve their CHI submissions
  • Give opportunities, particularly to students, to gain experience in reviewing and critiquing academic writing
  • Network with other researchers in the HCI community in Singapore
  • Improve the collective research capacity of the Singapore HCI community

Event Structure and Key Dates:

  1. Registration and submission of the introduction section (by July 26): Register and submit the introduction section of your paper(s) via the link provided below. Kotaro will match your paper with two reviewers.
  2. First Page Review (by Aug 2): Participants review and provide feedback on others' first pages. Send the review to the corresponding author.
  3. First Page Feedback Session (by Aug 8): Meeting between the authors and reviewers to discuss. Authors should contact the reviewers to set up the meeting. You are welcome to discuss this online, or we will book a space at SMU on Aug 8 (Thursday) if you and the reviewer prefer an on-site meeting and need some space.
  4. Full draft submission (by Aug 16): Authors submit a complete paper draft to the reviewers through email or other channel.
  5. Full draft review (by Aug 23): Participants conduct thorough reviews of assigned papers.
  6. Final Feedback Session (by Aug 30): Meeting to discuss full draft feedback and improvements. Like the first-page feedback session, you are welcome to meet online. Otherwise, we will book a space for the meeting on Aug 30.

Participation:

  • Open to Singapore HCI community members submitting papers to CHI 2025 (if you are seeing this message, you are likely considered a member of the community).
  • For each paper you submit to #chiclub2024, you will be asked to review roughly two papers.
  • To register, submit your name, email address, position, and the introduction section of your paper(s).
  • The introduction section of your paper(s) should be in a PDF format, which should include the main text as well as the title of your paper(s) and the list of authors. Please make sure that the file name has the following format: <your last name> <your first name> - <title of your paper>.pdf

Rules:

  1. Authors must complete one or two reviews for every paper they submit. (This is subject to the ratio between the number of submissions and number of authors who register. Also, if you are a student author’s advisor, please expect Kotaro to be chasing you for review requests!)
  2. All participants must adhere to the timeline, especially when submitting drafts and reviews.
  3. Reviewers commit to reading drafts, providing constructive feedback, and attending feedback sessions (either online or offline). You can be critical, but be polite.
  4. Authors are responsible for arranging meetings with their reviewers during feedback sessions.
  5. Announcements will be made via the HCI PhD SG Slack channel. Please join the channel if you have not. Invitation link: HCI PhD SG channel invitation link
